What Can Say a «Black Box»?

«Black box» is for those, who like fine and mysterious words, and in language of aviators this device is called emergency-operational flight data recorder. Usually indications of a black box are trusted in as it is considered to be an impartial witness, which will tell everything, make clear everything and call a cause of catastrophe.

In 1968 in the airplane of Yuriy Gagarin there were no any systems of flight parameters recording. After the catastrophe they had to define an angle of dip of the airplane by birches cut off by the airplane and by imprints of pointers on the dial-plates of control equipment remains... If there had been a «black box» in that airplane, how many conjectures and groundless accusation could have been rejected immediately.

First airborne control systems were developed and put into serial production in 1960”s and at the beginning of 70”s by the Kiev enterprise «Electronprylad», which in 2002 celebrated its 40-year anniversary. In 1980”s the enterprise became a head organization of the Ministry of aircraft industry in the field of development and production of computerized aircraft equipment control systems, power plants, emergency and operational systems of flight data recording and land systems of its processing. Developed and manufactured equipment is installed practically in all airplanes of Mikoyan, Suhoy and Yakovlev Special Design Office (SDO) and in many airplanes and helicopters of Antonov, Tupolev, Iljushin, Myasischev, Beriev, Kamov, Mil SDO. Today thousands of systems, complexes and devices produced by specialists of OJSC «STC «Electronprylad» are used in many countries of the world.

OJSC «STC «Elektronprylad» has a unique base for development, research and experimental debugging of the most sophisticated aircraft equipment.

Produced by the STC «Electronprylad» emergency-operational recorder BUR-4-1 (and its modifications BUR-4-01 and BUR-4-02) is meant for gathering, transformation and recording of parametric data during the flight and its retention in case of a flight accident. Following decoding of this data enables to ascertain a cause of a flight accident or preconditions for it, to evaluate a pilot technique of the flight personnel and technical condition of the plane or helicopter, as well as their systems, devices and equipment. The recorder includes data gathering block BSI-4, protected electronic storage BR-4T and control console PU-4.

Recorder BUR-4-1 is a technical development of operating now recorder BUR-4, in which airborne storage with magnetic tape is replaced by protected solid-state storage BR-4T. Block BR-4T retains data in case of a flight accident at temperature of +1100 C during 0,5 hours with total-lot general surface coverage, a single impact with acceleration of up to 3400 g, etc. according to the international standards ED 55 as well as to OST 100774-83 standards.

Airborne recording device BUR-4-1 passed certification in the Aviation register of the Interstate Aviation Committee and received a certificate of usability SGKI №142-80-BUR-4 of 22.06.2001.

Using of the recorder BUR-4-1, for example, in comparison with SARPP «black box» enables with a help of additional sensors and annunciators to receive more reliable and exact information about condition of systems and equipment during the flight; application of up-to-date means of data processing shortens terms of its decoding to a considerable degree; it is fully guaranteed data retention at severe flight accidents.
